I am directed by the secretary of State for

Foreign Affairs to acknowledge the receipt of your

despatch No. 45 of the 19th May relative to the re-

gistration of companies compostiɗ aliens as British

companies under the China (Amendment) Orders in Council

of 1913 and 1915.

As these companies appear, in law to be British,

it would seem impossible to advertise, as you propose,

that no recognition will be accorded them.

Protection,

on the other hand can be withheld from any company

whether registered or not under Article 51 (2) but,

as registration enables useful particulars to be obtain-
